If Blake thought I’d let her go over that bullshit, she was completely mistaken. If I had to give up everything and move to the middle of nowhere so I never made the tabloids again, I’d do it. I fucking had enough money that we could live off the grid on a mountain somewhere with our kids and grandkids and be quite comfortable the whole time. I didn’t need to agent; I just enjoyed it.

What did Blake want—besides that crap she’d just handed me? She’d gone to school for art and was graduating with a dual BFA degree in Design and Sculpture. What did she think she’d do with that? Normal, my ass. She had extraordinary talent. Had she even thought of what she’d do with it? Did she think no one would realize the connection between her and the rest of her family.

I chuckled quietly to myself. Honestly, it wasn’t fair to the rest of the world that they had this huge talent trove amongst them.

I glanced up from my laptop when the floor creaked about an hour after I’d sat on the saggy couch. Blake stood there with red-rimmed eyes, just quietly watching me. Setting aside my computer, I held out a hand to her. She took a deep breath and came toward me. I pulled her onto my lap and tucked her head against my neck.

“I thought you left,” she whispered.

“I’m not going anywhere.”

“Why?”

“Because you, the one and only, incredibly special Blake Sterling, are the only woman I have ever wanted and you’re the only one I will ever want. And I’m not going away. I plan to stay here and wear you down until you give up and just let me have you.”

She giggled. It sounded weary and sad , though. “I’m not,” she said.

“You are.”

“I can’t believe you stayed after my tantrum.”

“It’s been a rough day. I get it. Your emotions are high and everything seems out of control. But I plan to be here for you. Will you let me? Can I be your anchor?”

She nodded. “I still won’t like the spotlight,” she admitted. “But I was lying. Kind of. I don’t…I don’t want to say no to you. Do you have any idea how long I’ve wanted you. I used to watch games with Brayden, mostly because I’m his twin and he guilted me into it. The game part…eh. But the pregame… I used to love watching you guys walk into the building together, all dressed in your suits and long wool coats. It was cool. Then I saw you for the first time. I was thirteen so you had to be twenty-two, twenty-three about then since you’re not quite ten years older than me. And I thought, I’m going to marry him someday.”

“Just like that. Like lightning,” I observed, a knowing in my gut. Peace flowed into me as we sat there wrapped in one another.

“Silly, huh?”

“No. The first time I saw you, it was after Brayden came to me.
